Struggles with the music industry

When BTS was formed in 2013, Big Hit Entertainment was at the edge of bankruptcy. Naturally, the group had to suffer the many hardships and consequences of coming from a small company in an industry that was monopolized by big names and big money.

Where the K-Pop scene was filled with groups with huge budgets and brand names, BTS suffered the harsh realities of coming from a nearly broke company where they all had to live in a small dorm and struggle to make ends meet.

The financial troubles weren’t the only adversities that the group had to go through. BTS broke the mold of the traditional K-POP idols, by being a hip-hop group with an idol set-up and music that was different from the conventional, and a result of this they suffered much lash back from the industry as well the general public who believed that they couldn’t make it.

The group’s performances were often cut from the many music shows and they were constantly scrutinized for the smallest things.

Despite the success of their album ‘The Most Beautiful Moments of Life Pt1.’ and its successive EP ‘The Most Beautiful Moments in Life Pt.2’ in 2015,  the group still suffered many prejudices from the music industry and the public in Korea.

In 2015, I Need U’s first win ARMYs were so happy celebrating it with the boys, it was a great achievement for our fandom back then after all. But  what the kpop community did right after the win was announced, They accused BTS of sajaegi and plagiarism.

One of the biggest controversies of the same year the band had to face was the accusations that their album sales were a result of Big Hit buying their albums themselves.

Both KARMYs and IARMYS worked together to collect evidence that they bought all of the BTS album legally, all the voting and everything was done legally. Nobody cheated. But the accusations and slander didn’t stop. It reached such an extreme stage, even Bangtan responded.

Just the next year, 2016 when Wings Album was released a project called “BREAK WINGS PROJECT” which was a project that was participated in by multiple fandoms who were trying to sabotage WINGS by mass disliking the MV, reporting the video, trending hashtags and even voting against the boys for award shows. Before they even won a Daesang.

After BTS won their first daesang the whole kpop community accused of plagiarism of concepts and even hair colours, trended hate hashtags against BTS both internationally and in South Korea,  so much so that the boys saw it. Although all accusations were ultimately debunked as ridiculous.

Even after the accusation was cleared up the hate never stop, They crashed down the blue house official petition site by making constant “BTS disbandment” petitions and petitions to take away their first ever Daesang.

Billboard was an unneeded western validation and the first ever BB Top Social Artist  won by a korean act aka BTS was a paper award for them, BBMAs & BB was dissed by the whole kpop community just coz BTS charted on it and were awarded. And ARMYs were called beggarmys for making requests to radio stations to get BTS the success they deserve.

In February 2019, it was reported that Bernard Faucon’s agency had asked Big Hit Entertainment on his behalf for an apology and compensation over suspicions of copyright infringement by BTS’s album artwork for “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever” and their music video for “Blood Sweat & Tears.” compared BTS’s works with his own, and accused them of “plagiarism” but all these accusation were false and irrelevant after in February, Big Hit Entertainment responded by stating that the photos and clips from BTS’s album were not similar to Faucon’s works, and that because the parts that Faucon had claimed were similar were commonly used in filming, they were not subject to legal protection.

    • In 2019, ARMY spoke up about the seemingly absurd addition of a K-Pop category to the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony (VMAs) , as well as the lack of BTS in any of the main VMAs categories. Teen Vogue’s Aamina Khan argued back in July that the K-Pop category “just reiterates a tendency in Western awards shows to ‘celebrate’ non-Western, non-English speaking, non-white artists by separating them away from their accepted, non-othered counterparts.” This implied blatant racism and non inclusion of poc for mainstream awards. Nevertheless ARMYs found a way to level up their standom by creating their own online award show just for Bangtan to run at the same time as the VMAs. It had thoughtful categories for all videos from BTS like Best Social Message , Best Hidden Message besides the usual and there was a fun ” purple carpet ” event organised too!
    • BTS’ 2019 release Map Of The Soul : Persona was one of the best selling albums of the year smashing records left and right . It even outsold Queen Bey’s surprise live album Homecoming and became their third chart topping album in less than 11 consecutive months ( a feat earlier earned only by the Beatles ). Despite its organic and commercial success and to the disappointment of many, BTS and mots:persona were snubbed at the Grammy nominations . Dedicated fans brought out statistics to prove BTS deserved a nomination for at least Best Album of the year, Best Pop Vocal Album or Best World Music Album .
    • But then like a very famous article said ” as BTS continue smashing records and the Grammys continue losing relevance, who really needs who ? ” ARMYs this year too hope that BTS will get that grammy nomination since it would be the best gift for the boys ,but only time will tell . BTS continue remaining the humble, extremely talented superstars outselling all major artists anyway.
    • Next in Line was E! People’s Choice Awards where BTS got nominated for three sections – Song of the year, Music video of the year and Concert tour of the year but did not win in even one. ARMYs called them out saying it wasn’t possible for them to lose , no way in fan voted categories at least. They laid out facts and numbers to prove how BTS truly deserved to win each of the above categories . Few even labelled the show as rigged as votes clearly showed BTS’ win with an enviable margin!
    • The final nail in the coffin was the declaration of the judging committee. “NBCU reserves the right to make the final determination as to which of the nominees will be declared the winner of the category” which clearly proved the show was biased from the beginning .

The very recent incident in 2020 when 19 different fandoms teamed again armys and BTS to vote on Starplay, constantly crashes the app so armys wouldn’t be able to cast their vote.
